Pathways to Officer
Traditional Route: Minimum 2-year degree in law enforcement and completion of Skills
Police Cadet: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college program to obtain a two- or four-year degree or already possess a degree. Once accepted, the applicant may be eligible for tuition reimbursement while completing their degree. Applicants will work part-time as a cadet earning $24.36/hour while attending school. Successful cadets will be promoted to a full-time police officer.
Pathways to Policing: Designed to bring non-traditional candidates into law enforcement, this program requires a minimum 2-year degree in any field. Once accepted, the City of Eagan will pay for the applicant $25.00/hour to attend Hennepin Technical College (approximately 22 weeks) and then take the licensing exam. Successful candidates will be promoted to a full-time police officer.
Pathway to Specialty Units
Specialty units require 1-3 years experience in Law Enforcement and a standard testing process. Some of these units include Investigations, Crime Scene, SWAT, Drone, K9, and more.
Promotions normally require a minimum of 3 years in the current position and a testing process.

All new police officers participate in a four-week in house academy. After the academy, new officers are paired with three field training officers until they transition to solo patrol. The Eagan Police field training program rewards hard work and high standards and works to develop recruits into reliable police officers who have the desire and ability to serve our community with compassion and courage.
As the wants and needs of our community change, we need to be able to change how we do things, as well.

- Starting Salary - $68,993/year
- Top patrol officer pay - $99,653 (achieved after 36 months)
- Longevity pay for 5 years (4%), 10 years (2.5%) and 15 years of service (2.5%)
- A 9% increase over top patrol for a 15 year veteran
