Homicide - Silver Bell Road

On December 18, 2021, at 6:56 pm, Eagan officers responded to a report of a victim suffering from a gunshot in the 1900 block of Silver Bell Rd.  Early indications are the suspect left in a vehicle, crashed nearby and fled on foot. Officers located the suspect and recovered a weapon. The victim was transported to the hospital and his condition is unknown.

Eagan detectives and crime scene personnel are actively processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses.  This is an active open investigation.  At this time, we do not believe there is a threat to the public.

Update - December 19, 2021 - 5:00 pm

The victim from this incident has been identified as Faisal A. Abukar, age 33, of Eagan, and we were advised by the medical examiner’s office that he was pronounced dead earlier today.  Again, we do not believe there is a threat to the public, but we are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Eagan Police Department at 651-675-5700.

Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft

Police departments all over Minnesota continue to learn of vehicle thefts of catalytic converters, which are made of precious metals and can be sold to dealers for $250 to $500 each. Unfortunately, they’re quick to steal and have no serial numbers or identifying markings, which make them almost untraceable. To prevent your catalytic converter from being stolen, day or night, the Eagan Police Department recommends taking these precautions:

  • Park in a garage whenever possible.
  • If parking outside, park in well-lit areas close to building entrances.
  • Mark your catalytic converter with high-temperature paint.
    • By adding bright paint, you create a visible deterrent to thieves. This marking also helps police in identifying a stolen catalytic converter.
  • Install a catalytic converter protection device.
  • Watch for suspicious activity around parked vehicles.
  • Listen for the distinct sound of grinding metal.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.

Fatal Crash on Slater Road

On December 22, 2020, at 2:24 am, Eagan officers were dispatched to the 4400 block of Slater Road for a vehicle crash. The 911 caller stated a car had crashed in her backyard and was smoking. Officers responded to the area and located one occupant inside the vehicle and another occupant a short distance away.

The front right passenger, identified as 43-year-old Michael William Renlund, was found deceased inside the vehicle. The driver, 28-year-old Michael John Coombes, sustained injuries from the crash and was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol. Michael was transported to Regions Hospital with a police escort.  A warrant was obtained for a blood draw from Michael and he remains at Regions receiving treatment for his injuries.

This was a single vehicle crash and no other vehicles or persons were involved in the incident. The State Patrol is assisting the investigation and will be conducting a crash reconstruction to determine what events took place leading up to the crash.

Homicide Near Sonesta Suites

On November 9, 2020, at 8:58 PM, Eagan officers responded to a report of gunshots near Eagandale Place and Lone Oak Road. When officers arrived, they located one male victim on the southeast side of Sonesta Suites with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. That male was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, Eagan officers stopped a vehicle leaving the area and took a man and woman into custody. Both were transported back to the Eagan Police Department and remain in custody.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.  This does not appear to be a random incident, however the relationship between the suspects and victim are still under investigation.  Further details of the case will be released as they become available. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is encouraged to call the Eagan Police Department at 651-675-5799.

Chief New Speaks about Community Conversations

On May 9, 2019, the Eagan Police Department hosted an event entitled “Building Bridges and Trust Between You and the Police”, where the goal was to engage in meaningful conversation, and provide a platform for people to speak openly with their police department. Much of the conversation involved trauma related to policing, ways to build trust and ways to improve police and community relations. The event drew 50 people who expressed their gratitude for putting the event together and providing an opportunity to be heard.

In the coming weeks, it is my hope that Covid-19 is beyond us where we can find an opportunity to do this again, as more than ever, we all need to find a way to heal together. In order for this to be successful, we need to enter into the conversation with the mindset of “listening first”, which will lead to thoughtful and respectful dialogue, and create opportunities to learn from one another. As your Chief, I can assure you we are committed to having a genuine conversation with our community members, but until then I would like to share some of the things we’ve done at the Eagan Police Department.

• In 2016, we created a Community Affairs Group which is made up of a diverse group of Eagan residents, where we seek their feedback, and we’ve discussed different aspects of policing.
• Seven of our officers are Implicit Bias instructors.
• Annually, we put our staff through Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation training where three of our officers are trainers
• Four out of the last five officers hired were women.
• We created a Cadet position in 2017, with hopes of drawing more diverse candidates.
• We changed our mission statement in 2019 to read:

The Eagan Police Department is committed to providing public safety and maintaining public trust by serving with respect and professionalism

Again, the purpose for this event will be to have meaningful conversations with our community members, where everyone will be heard. This is not intended to draw attention to ourselves, as I suspect very few people knew about last year’s event, and it will not be political in nature. Please continue to watch our social media sites and the city website for more information, and know the members of the Eagan Police Department are committed to making a difference in our community and we will look forward to seeing you at this event.
