Recent federal immigration enforcement activity in the Twin Cities has understandably created fear and uncertainty for many residents. The City of Eagan wants to provide clear information, reaffirm our values, and explain the role of the City and the Eagan Police Department.
Immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government. The City of Eagan and the Eagan Police Department do not participate in or assist with federal immigration enforcement. Eagan police do not enforce immigration laws, ask about immigration status, or participate in immigration investigations with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection, or other federal immigration agencies.
The Eagan Police Department’s role is to protect public safety and build trust with the community. Everyone in Eagan—regardless of immigration status—should feel safe calling 911, reporting crimes, seeking help, or cooperating as a witness or victim. Officers do not stop, question, detain, or conduct checks based on immigration status, and City resources are not used for federal immigration enforcement.
Federal agencies do not notify the City or Police Department in advance of enforcement activity. If Eagan officers are present during federal actions, it is only to address a separate public safety concern, such as crowd management or emergency response. In those situations, officers focus on de-escalation and protecting people and property, while complying with the law and not interfering with federal enforcement.
Our commitment to the community
The City of Eagan remains committed to being a welcoming community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where all who live, work, and play here can thrive. City leadership continues to communicate internally and work with regional partners to support community-focused outreach.
City staff have proactively visited immigrant-owned and operated businesses and engaged with leaders from Eagan’s Somali and other East African communities to build safe, caring, and meaningful relationships.
These efforts are ongoing and reflect the City’s commitment to equity, trust, and authentic engagement. We encourage community groups and impacted communities to reach out and connect with the City so we can listen, learn, and build relationships. We remain open to meeting with and hearing from any individuals or groups who have concerns or questions about the current immigration-related climate.
Members of our immigrant communities are a valued part of Eagan, and their safety and well-being remain a priority.
Please take care of yourselves and one another during these challenging times.
