City of Eagan Issues Statement on Federal Immigration Enforcement and Community Safety
Eagan, MN — The City of Eagan has published a statement to address community concerns following recent federal immigration enforcement activity in the Twin Cities that has created fear and uncertainty for many Eagan residents.
The City emphasized that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government. The City of Eagan and the Eagan Police Department do not participate in or assist with federal immigration enforcement activities. Eagan police do not enforce immigration laws, ask about immigration status, or take part in immigration investigations with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection, or other federal agencies.
“The role of the Eagan Police Department is to protect public safety and build trust with the community,” the statement reads. “Everyone in Eagan — regardless of immigration status — should feel safe calling 911, reporting crimes, seeking help, or cooperating as a witness or victim.” Officers do not stop, question, or detain individuals based on immigration status, and City resources are not used for federal immigration enforcement.
The City also reaffirmed its commitment to being a welcoming community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and where all who live, work, and play in Eagan can thrive.
City staff have proactively visited immigrant-owned and operated businesses and engaged with leaders from Eagan’s Somali and other East African communities to build safe, caring, and meaningful relationships. Community members have expressed appreciation for the City’s intentional outreach and engagement.
The City encourages community groups and impacted residents to reach out, share concerns, and connect with City staff. Eagan remains open to listening, learning, and meeting with individuals or groups who have questions about the current immigration-related climate.
Members of Eagan’s immigrant communities are a valued part of the city, and their safety and well-being remain a priority. For the full statement, visit cityofeagan.com/commitment-to-community.
